בעבר מגדלור היה דבר חשוב ביותר לספנים, השקיעו הרבה מחשבה וכסף במבנה ובעיקר במנורות/ פנסים, שהם העיקר. בצרפת היה מפעל שיצר מנורות בדולח לצורך זה.

מומלץ לערוך סקירה של מגדלורים לאורך קו חוף מסוים. זה טוב לימי קיץ ולאסקפיזם. ( גילוי נאות, בשנות ה80 ערכנו סיור אמיתי כזה לאורך החוף המזרחי של ארה"ב , מוויקטוריה קנדה עד לוס אנג'לס)
